Our Team

I’ve worked as a stream ecologist for over 40 years and find that the science still fascinates me.  I learn something about every stream or river that I work in.  My professional goals primarily are about advancing the science of stream ecology, whether that’s as a contractor working on a restoration project or teaching aquatic insect taxonomy or ecology to students.  

Growing up in Germany I lived near Rhine and Mosel rivers during the big ecological crisis of the 70s and 80s and witnessed mass mortality of fish in the waters surrounding our village. These incidents left a deep impression on me and I decided that I wanted to protect aquatic environments. Throughout my education and career I have remained focused on this field with a masters and PhD about invasive benthic species and benthic living communities. While following my husband abroad and raising three kids I was able to work in different aquatic research institutions in Europe, NZ and Asia. We live in NC for almost nine years and I am happy to be able to contribute to work in the field of water protection and restoration.

I’ve worked for many years as a consultant in the Asheville area and am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, focusing on Systemic Multicultural Counseling and Expressive Arts Therapy. As an undergraduate, I studied river ecology and the poetics of environment. While my pursuits have moved away from pure science, I’m still motivated by the relational nature of life on Earth. Our species’ degraded awareness of its intrinsic place within the web of life fills me with deep and mighty grief—the grief is so big, in fact, I sense it’s not all mine. Perhaps you sense it, too? Large­scale resource acquisition and environmental deterioration are real and pervasive; their effects are so vast they can be difficult to approach.
